Sony-Backed Layer 2 Network 'Soneium' Launches Public Testnet 'Minato'

Sony Group's blockchain joint venture with Startale Labs, Sony Block Solutions Labs (Sony BSL), launched the “Soneium Minato” public testnet, alongside an ambitious developer incubation program, "Soneium Spark." According to the team: "This dual initiative marks a significant milestone in Sony Group's entry in Web3, poised to catalyze ecosystem growth and accelerate adoption by leveraging its vast global reach and technological expertise across entertainment, gaming and consumer electronics sectors." The move comes a week after the pioneering electronics giant unveiled the plans to erect a layer-2 network atop Ethereum called Soneium, using technology from Optimism's OP Stack.

Starknet Gets Parallel Execution, 2-Second Transactions With 'Bolt' Upgrade

Parallel execution has arrived on Starknet with the 'Bolt' upgrade, expanding the Ethereum layer-2 blockchain's capacity "by enabling independent transactions to be executed simultaneously," according to the team: "The network is the first layer 2 to have 'megastore capabilities,' with the sequencer now able to execute multiple transactions in parallel. The introduction of Parallel Execution is part of the network's upgrade to version 13.2, which also includes Block Packing, a feature that makes use of every last bit of block space and will reduce confirmation time to two seconds — exactly what devs and users want from Starknet." Drone-Delivery Network Hyperway Working With Peaq Blockchain for Smart-Contract Rewards

Hyperway, described as a "decentralized physical infrastructure network (DePIN) of community-owned ground relays for ensuring fast data exchange between delivery drones and ground control centers," is working with the layer-1 blockchain peaq for certain functionality, according to a blog post published Wednesday. The peaq team wrote in a message that "Hyperway is building a DePIN of community-owned ground-based stations serving drones, air taxis, autonomous cargo ships and other transport. It has partnered with four Asian governments (Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and Japan) and signed a major agreement with the Malaysian state of Sabah to support cargo drone operations in agriculture." The blog post elaborated that "as part of the integration with peaq, Hyperway will build the software needed to connect 5G and satellite ground relays with peaq. It will also build the smart contracts rewarding the owners of such stations with tokens based on how much bandwidth the drones have used up. It will also integrate peaq-compatible digital wallets into the DePIN and run a restricted public trial involving real-world drone flights powered by its DePIN."

Investment Firm Lemniscap Raises $70M Fund Targeting Early Stage Web3 Projects

Lemniscap, a Cayman Islands-headquartered investment firm, said it raised a $70 million fund to back early stage Web3 projects. The fund will focus on projects in the Bitcoin ecosystem, reflecting a trend of the past 18 months, whereby developers have sought to introduce to the world's oldest blockchain utility that is more commonly associated with the likes of the Ethereum network. Lemniscap is targeting zero-knowledge infrastructure, consumer applications and decentralized physical infrastructure (DePIN), according to an emailed announcement on Wednesday.

Mezo, Acre Launch 'stBTC,' Claiming First With Liquid Yield-Bearing Bitcoin Product on TBTC

Mezo, describing itself as an "economic layer built by Bitcoin venture studio Thesis," and fellow project Acre, "the BTC-in-BTC-out staking platform," have launched stBTC, "the first liquid, yield-bearing Bitcoin product built on tBTC," according to the team: "By generating yield on Mezo users’ locked assets, stBTC boosts liquidity for putting Bitcoin to work on popular DeFi platforms including Curve. Hinkal, Privacy-Oriented Institutional Protocol, Forms Board of Curators

FIRST IN PROTOCOL VILLAGE: Hinkal, an institutional self-custodial protocol designed for cross-chain shared privacy, announced the formation of its Board of Curators, which includes leading trading firms such as Re7 Labs, Dialectic, Theia, Agnostic and Aquanow "to bring privacy to on-chain dApps." According to the team: "These firms will participate in the dApp selection and whitelisting process, ensuring that only high-quality applications can enable private and compliant transactions on the platform. Bluwhale Launches Mobile Web App to Simplify Node Operation

Bluwhale, an AI Web3 start-up connecting enterprises to consenting wallet holders and enabling digital profile monetization, announced the launch of a mobile web app "for a vastly simplified process of contributing/verifying data and even operating nodes." According to the team, the app "enables one-click node sale and operation, giving retail users access to the wave of node sales as well as all the benefits of node sale participation. SOON (Solana Optimistic Network), describing itself as a "rollup stack powered by decoupled SVM" and built on Optimism's OP Stack, has successfully raised a co-builder round from Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko, Solana Foundation's Lily Liu, Coinbase Ventures's Jonathan King, Celestia's Mustafa Al-Bassam and other prominent builders. According to the team: "SOON Stack is poised to be the highest throughput rollup stack that allows for settlement on any layer 1, using the Solana Virtual Machine as the execution layer. Space and Time (SxT), a blockchain-native data warehouse that incorporates artificial intelligence (AI) tools to build applications using its data, has raised $20 million in Series A funding. The funding round, which takes SxT's total backing to $50 million, was led by Framework Ventures, Lightspeed Faction, Arrington Capital and Hivemind Capital, according to an emailed announcement on Tuesday.

RootstockLabs Contributes to ETHOnline 2024 Hackathon

RootstockLabs, the developer behind the Ethereum EVM-compatible Bitcoin sidechain Rootstock, said it will participate as a key sponsor in ETHOnline 2024, a hackathon for the crypto space taking place Aug. 26 to Sept. 13, where a prize pool of $225,000 is to be won. According to the team, RootstockLabs will be "supporting participating DeFi developers and providing three prizes totaling $10,000 for the best project specifically built for the Rootstock platform during this event. Radix Plans $37M Endowment Fund, Starts Search for Institutional Manager

Radix, a distributed ledger project built around native assets known as "resources," has announced the planned creation of the 1.5 billion XRD ($37 million) Endowment Fund. According to the team: "The fund is intended to support long term ecosystem growth while securing financial support for the entities involved in the development and growth of the Radix platform and ecosystem. The process of selecting an institution to manage the fund – one requirement is that it have a balance sheet in excess of $1 billion in crypto – is underway. The selected partner will use Copper Custody, a regulated crypto custodian, to hold the XRD assets, and Twinstake, to provide the staking infrastructure where tokens may be deployed and staked as part of the overall strategy." Curvance, Modular Protocol for Optimized Liquidity, Launches Public Testnet

Curvance, a modular protocol for optimized liquidity management, launched their public testnet on Ethereum's Sepolia, Arbitrum's Sepolia and Berachain's bArtio V2. According to the team: "Public testnet is the final chance to submit feedback and, most importantly, earn some coveted Bytes. Public testers in the Curvance testnet can collect up to 300 Bytes."

Sony Block Solutions Labs, a joint project between Sony Group and Singapore-based Startale Labs, said Friday it's coming out with a new layer-2 network atop the Ethereum blockchain called Soneium. It will be built using the Optimism blockchain ecosystem’s OP Stack.

NEAR Blockchain Gets Major Upgrade to Add 'Stateless Validation'

NEAR Protocol has deployed a major upgrade known as "Nightshade 2.0" on its main network, designed to improve the scalability and usability of the blockchain. New features include "stateless validation," a concept that Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has written about extensively, according to a press release from the NEAR Foundation, which supports the blockchain.

Appchain protocol Tanssi, historically focused on the Polkadot blockchain, is expanding to Ethereum with Symbiotic, a restaking protocol. According to the team, the effort could set "a new standard for the rapid launch of decentralized networks, aka Actively Validated Services (AVSs). What usually takes months can be done in minutes, allowing developers to deploy highly customizable and decentralized networks, with Ethereum’s robust security."

SatLayer, Project for Staking Bitcoin Through Babylon, Raises $8M

SatLayer has raised $8 million in pre-seed funding, led by Hack VC and Castle Island Ventures, "to expand Bitcoin as a universal security layer," according to the team: "Founded by MIT, Y Combinator, and Stanford alumni, SatLayer leverages Babylon Chain’s Proof of Stake to secure Actively Validated Services via BTC staking. 'We're excited for SatLayer’s launch on Babylon and its impact on BTC-secured AVSs,' said Fisher Yu, Babylon’s co-founder and CTO. VitaDAO Founders Launch Protocol 'BIO' With DAOs to Raise Funding for Scientific Research

The founders of VitaDAO, a Web3 community devoted to longevity health research and products, launched BIO, a "new protocol enabling global communities of patients, scientists and biotech builders to collectively fund and commercialize new therapeutics," according to the team: "Revenue from new therapeutics flow back into the BIO Network, creating value for network participants. BIO completed the first round of its TGE, raising $6.2 in a public sale, with participation from VCs like Zee Prime, 1kx ID Theory. Details on the second round of BIO’s TGE will be announced soon." According to the project documentation: "BioDAOs raise funding via token sales, and use their treasuries to back and develop biotech projects related to their mission, creating shared IP ownership between their members. Chronicle, which was the first oracle on Ethereum and is currently the sole securer of MakerDAO, has launched its RWA Oracle via an integration with M^0, "an on-chain protocol that allows multiple Minters to issue a fully fungible cryptodollar called $M." According to the team: "In this collaboration, Chronicle serves as an independent validator, verifying M^0’s collateral balances.
