Blockchain Key Manager Cubist, Led by Carnegie Mellon's Wahby, Launches Bridge-Security System 'Bascule'
PROTOCOL VILLAGE EXCLUSIVE: Cubist, a blockchain startup focused on key management led by applied-cryptography expert and Carnegie Mellon computer-engineering professor Riad Wahby, announced the launch of a new bridge security system, Bascule. According to the team: "Bascule will effectively prevent staking hacks in real-time and eliminate custodial risk in staking projects. Bascule reports all user deposits made on a given chain to a smart contract on a second chain, providing a cross-check that solves the fundamental lack of reconciliation between deposits and withdrawals that leads to almost all serious bridge hacks. With Bascule, staking platforms and their users can now trust that every minting and withdrawal request is backed by a legitimate deposit." The following are a couple quotes from Wahby in an interview:
- "The grew out of a collaboration with some folks in the Bitcoin space," including the liquid staking protocol Babylon.
- "We've seen a lot of approaches to building bridges, which are based on these five people not getting hacked."
- "If only you had the cosmic cross-chain accountant – what happened on this side, what happened on that side – you would almost sort of be OK."
- "So the question was, How do we build this really dumb accountant, mostly an observer?"
- "This watcher is there to make sure that what's happening on the bridge is sensible."
- "You're not making the bridge more complex, you're adding this orthogonal functionality."

Crypto Developers Propose 'Panoramic Governance' to Incentivize Participation in Layer-2 Chains
A trio of pseudonymous crypto developers proposed a new mechanism called "Panoramic Governance" to incentivize governance participation and protocol growth within layer-2 blockchains. According to the whitepaper, written by 0xCygaar, 0xBeans and 0xMons: "Panoramic Governance can be implemented on any layer-2 blockchain with a native governance token and a sequencing system where users pay gas fees for faster transaction ordering and trusted pre-confirmations. PG consists of two interdependent systems: one that distributes sequencer fees to governance voters that actively participate in the network and one that allows voters to direct token emissions to protocols built on the given blockchain. Protocols increase demand for block space, resulting in higher sequencer fees. This, in turn, boosts earnings for active governance voters, who are then motivated to allocate more emissions to successful protocols on the chain."
